Taiwan's largest lake, Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) is located in the mountains of Nantou at the geographic centre of Taiwan island. The name of the lake is inspired by the beauty of the area. The east side of the lake is round, like the sun, while the west side is long and narrow, like a crescent moon.
It is the largest body of water in Taiwan. The area surrounding the lake has many trails for hiking. There are three ferry piers within the lake to move around from one point to another. The overall environment here is chilling and relaxing, as you are standing right in the middle of the Taiwanese mountainous terrain, offering a breathtaking view of the natural landscape at the heart of the island.
The lake is accessible by bus from Taichung HSR station or Taichung TRA station. Buses operate from Taichung to Sun Moon Lake Station hourly. Tickets cost 200 - 300 NTD and the journey takes 1h 33m.
The aboriginal Thao tribe lives around the lake. They add a special flavor to the aboriginal dishes. I tried their sausages and dumplings. I could smell some special curry inside the meat which is gorgeous. Yummmm...
The Thao moji is really addictive! I decided to go with some chocolate and my colorful sprinkles.
After taking a ferry to another side, we found "tea-braised eggs" or Taiwanese called "century eggs" which recommended by native Taiwanese that they are tastier because of the water here is so purify and nice.
"Red Tea" is also another recommendation. It is really refreshing and aromatic. I didn't only enjoy beautiful scenery here but also their lovely food.
The cable car ride overlooks the spectacular view of the Sun Moon Lake. However, services were cancelled during the time we went. We rent a small electronic bicycle and ride along the lake instead. Getting around by bike has to be the most fun way of exploring Sun Moon Lake.
You can enjoy the splendid view of the water body and the mountain view. The main street is full of food stalls and souvenir shops.
The lake is so beautiful you can’t help but stop and take pictures often. Sun moon Lake was a nice place to visit. Recommend to do whole day or spend a night if you plan to complete the whole area.
